Opinion | How Hip-Hop Became America’s Poetry

As a kid in the 1970s, even one attending private schools, I was directed to drive by poetry slowly now and then, but rarely to actually stop and take it in deeply. Today, while vanishingly few people are up for reciting poems such as Joyce Kilmer’s “Trees” or Tennyson’s “The Charge of the Light Brigade,” vast numbers can eagerly and effortlessly recite hip-hop lyrics. But true verse of the kind featured in hip-hop — poetry that does not rely on melody or harmony — centers the word alone. In contrast to the synergy of song and word, verse is an especially heightened form of language alone. Rap is verse poetry, in all of its verbal richness and rhythmic variety, a deft stylization of speech into art.

WASHINGTON — Democrats on Capitol Hill are forming a new working group on artificial intelligence and prioritizing how to prevent deepfakes from wreaking havoc on personal lives, national security and the upcoming 2024 elections. Rep. Derek Kilmer, D-Wash., will chair the new AI working group in the New Democrat Coalition, a 97-member bloc of House members that typically avoid the spotlight but wield significant influence over policy within the caucus. "There's real concern about the potential for AI generated disinformation, real concern about misuse of advanced AI models," Kilmer told CNBC. Another concerning aspect for many lawmakers is what AI generated images could mean in the world of campaign ads. Ron DeSantis recently used AI in an ad to replicate former president Donald Trump's voice "reading" a post that Trump had written on social media.

WASHINGTON, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Moderate Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives have formed a working group on artificial intelligence aimed at tackling the issue of what restrictions, if any, should be put on the technology. The New Democrat Coalition announced the formation of the group on Tuesday, saying it would work with the Biden administration, companies and other lawmakers to develop "sensible, bipartisan policies to address this emerging technology." While artificial intelligence has been used for several years, it surged in popularity earlier this year with the rise of ChatGPT because of generative AI's ability to use data to create human-seeming prose. The group is to be headed by Representative Derek Kilmer, a Democrat from Washington state. In July, the White House announced that AI companies including OpenAI, Alphabet (GOOGL.O) and Meta Platforms (META.O) had made voluntary commitments to implement measures such as watermarking AI-generated content to help make the technology safer.

Cities and regions left behind by bygone industries can now apply for funding to revitalize jobs. The Biden administration is opening up applications for its Recompete Pilot Program. Under that program, a handful of "distressed communities" can receive at least $20 million. It's called the Recompete Pilot Program, and it's meant to pump funds into economically distressed areas. According to research from Timothy J. Bartik for the Brookings Institute, nearly a sixth of the country's population lives in distressed communities.

Steven Romero and Martie Kilmer are well-versed in bathhouses. Mr. Romero, 58, who retired as an eBay vice president and founded Critical Path Software, first encountered ancient bathing facilities as an exchange student in Istanbul in high school. Ms. Kilmer, 53, a sculptor and home stylist, learned to appreciate the creation of bathing ceremonies in a drier version from sauna-like steam baths known as maqii in Alaska, where her parents, both teachers, moved from Oregon when she was in high school.
Setting that aside, a Disney+ revival series isn’t without its charms, in a more contemporary narrative that brings back Warwick Davis while focusing on the next generation. The latter were played by Val Kilmer and Joanne Whalley, respectively, who as an off-screen bonus got married after the film. Jonathan Kasdan (who also worked on “Solo”) serves as showrunner, collaborating with four directors who each oversaw back-to-back episodes. While that combination doesn’t add up into making “Willow” significantly worthier of the “beloved” label than its late-’80s predecessor, consumed on its own unpretentious terms, it’s easy enough to like. “Willow” premieres November 30 on Disney+.
It’s a refreshing turn against recent trends that a cult classic without the sizable built-in fanbase of, say, a “Star Wars” or Marvel property would receive the fancy reboot treatment. “You could be walking around a convention floor, and in a sea of Harley Quinns, you’ll spot a Willow,” Delaney observed. High hopesThe arrival of the new 8-episode series comes with high hopes from the small but mighty fanbase. Bob Dolman, who wrote the screenplay for the original film, also acted as supervising producer on the first episode. Kilmer’s ex-wife Joanne Whalley, who he met on the original film, will be back in the series as warrior Sorsha.

He spends an hour working from home each day before heading to the office for in-person meetings. Chang's, about his morning work routine. These early morning meetings are informal in nature and reflect a very comfortable "open-door" ethos that exists within our senior executive team, which I love. I have a rule with my executive assistant not to schedule any meetings before 8 a.m. Starting at 8 a.m., the meetings begin and tend to come fast and furious for the remainder of the day.
President Joe Biden’s announcement about cannabis policy reform last week underscored how keeping it illegal disproportionately harms people of color. Biden’s move is an important step in changing the federal approach to cannabis. Some jurisdictions are considering how cannabis tax revenues could be used to address racial disparities. For example, Evanston, Illinois., is using some of its cannabis tax revenues to support slavery reparations. Cannabis legalization isn’t just a yes-or-no choice.
Sen. Patrick Leahy, the veteran Democratic lawmaker who told reporters Monday he will not seek re-election in Vermont, holds impressive distinctions. Leahy went on to appear in "Batman & Robin" (1997), "The Dark Knight" (2008), "The Dark Knight Rises" (2012) and "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (2016). "The Dark Knight" gave Leahy his juiciest role outside Capitol Hill — as well as his most cherished Batman cameo, according to David Carle, Leahy's press secretary. "He scared the heck out of me, when he came at me with the knife," Leahy told the political publication Roll Call. "I have too many other things going on with Covid, with appropriation bills," Leahy told the newspaper in August 2020.
